How to make safe and inclusive learning environments for students with learning disabilities?

Learning Environments Tips

We are all-inclusive and safe in learning environments



1) Stop Ableism

-Do not ask invasive questions to students with LD
-Teaching all students about the ablest micro-aggression 
eg) She is such a psycho, That's so lame
-Recognizing more ableism
"Do not assume you know what someone needs" 
"Believe first when students speak about their disabilities

2) Consider the space

-Assistive tools: helping students with LDs' level of function 
Whiteboard, fine motor assistive device, headphones, graphic organizer
Text-to-speech, word prediction programs 
Colour binder, visual time, daily schedule 
-Greeting area at the door: Welcoming them by checking their emotions, and physical 
health 
-Comfortable area with bookshelf: having extra time, and emotional controls for all students 
Putting preferential seating, chewing gum, stress ball, advocacy card 
-File folder area: Supporting organization skills, and safety for all 
Putting organizing checklist for LDs, supplement materials, sanitizer, colour binder and mask  
-Classroom anchor area
Putting some examples of the production of success criteria 
Putting anchor charts with a visual cue with clear instruction
Encouraging students with common goals to be more inclusive 

3) Promoting self-efficacy

-Building up a rapport between students and teacher 
To feel more confident about sharing their goals and increase students' confidence 
-Using self-efficacy cards and a behaviour chart 
To increase self-esteem by speaking up about their specific needs 
Preparing student's behaviour for the next learning to remove students' barriers
-Encouragin students growth mindset to have more confidence

4) Planning stage

To Help students' social-emotional, physical, and cognitive learning environment, and development


Social-emotional learning environment

-Having Open-mindedness 
-Checking on students' emotions 
-Building up a rapport: a sense of humour
-Provide positive and futuristic feedback 
-Respect students' dignity
-Creating a democratic learning environment
-Helping them to have achievable learning goal

Physical learning environment

-Providing a safer space when students need a help
-Setting up an interactive small group to exchange the inquiry and feedback for the improvement 
-Giving students a clear example 
-Assistive tool to help their learning
-Motivational learning materials 
-Interactive communication app for the homework 

Cognitive learning environment & development

-Asking framing questions to remember them of a big idea
-Making questions about why they think (Reasoning)
-Thank them for what they think during the think-share time
-Construct the criteria for the assessment
-Showing them possible productions relating to success criteria
-Filling out the Self-reflection checklist and preparing the implementing plan for student's unsure learnings
-Providing them with suitable thinking skills and strategy tools to organize their ideas
-Giving them a practicing time to apply their learning pattern to the new learnings
(eg. Making a journal or culminating task using pictures: personalization)

5) Designing a learning environment

To create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students


Physical learning environment

-Flexible space for making collaborative work and inquiry learning environment 
-Desk and table should be displayed for easy contact with students and teachers 
-Assistive tools for helping students' underdeveloped area
 Sensory/ Flexible seating /Fidget toys
 Greenery/ Braille
-interactive display/Manipulatives
-Comfortable space to relax and complete the task 
-Empathy map zone to restore the relationship
-Discovery center near the natural light

Social-emotional environment

-Stop Ableism: Do not assume you know what students with LDs need 
-Focusing on students' strategies and interpretation
-Checking on students' emotions 
-Building up a rapport and promoting self-efficacy using cards and behaviour chart
-Encouraging students' collaboration
-Co-creating safe norms about how to give the feedback 
-Respecting the rules and how to take turns in an equitable 
-Building up restorative FNMI circle on minds on activity to promote self-esteem

Cognitive learning environment

-Bring into real-world problem-solving to develop their thinking skills 
-Using DI, creative leadership, and outside-box thinking
-Personalization and precision
-Using aboriginal teaching and values to support the self-esteem among students with LDs
-Providing open-ended materials to promote creativity
-Preparing rich, engaging, and inclusive learning materials to encourage deep learning
-Integrating FNMI, ecological awareness, and racism pedagogy into the classroom to be more inclusive  
-Giving enough time to connect the learnings  
-Compensatory strategies
 Visual planners 
 Mnemonics
 Colorcoding
